On June 11^th, we held our Kiwanis Club of Ishpeming Annual Golf Outing. Proceeds from the outing benefit stay in our community to foster youth and related programs and helped place the finishing touches on the Ray Leverton memorial Playground. Dear U.P. Home Health & Hospice, Thank you very much for your donation of $100 to our 2024 Summer Reading Program: Adventure Begins at your Library! We rely heavily on donations to be able to offer fun, constructive programs to our community. Without your support it wouldn’t be possible! Last year we had 370 children and teens register for the eight-week-long program. We were thrilled to see 858 young people attend our 32 programs for their age group! Our adult program saw the largest increase in participation: 105 participants submitted 492 unique book reviews to be entered into drawings for prizes (often gift cards donated by local businesses). An incredible 270 adults attended 22 programs, including gardening, craft, and other programs. We were so thrilled to be able to offer so many activities that interested people in our community. U.P. Home Health & Hospice, Thank you so much for your generous support in 2023! The year was filled with joy and friendship through our signature Friendly Visiting program and fun-filled activities.
We celebrated Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas with in-person gatherings and home meal deliveries. Volunteers and staff carry out our mission through direct services including Medical Transportation, monthly Food Pantry assistance, and Firewood assistance not to mention the companionship these programs also provide. This past fall we welcomed five new international volunteers from Germany and France: Ella, Jeremy, Lars, Marie, and Romy who provide outreach to lonely and isolated elderly people. They will be volunteering for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly through late this summer.

U.P. Home Health & Hospice, When we saw the “little blue car” pull up at Ted’s trailer—we knew our first of many “angels” had arrived in October 2023. There are not enough words to express our gratitude for the compassionate, kind, respectful care and support my brother received from U.P. Hospice Services. To be sure, the hospice staff fulfilled its philosophy by providing empowered care, comfort and support for him, myself and our family during our hospice and respite journey. From the moment John showed up at his home to guide me through draining his lung to Dorothy’s weekly visits to Trillium House—I knew he was in good hands. The professional, caring time spent with me and my brother was invaluable. Dorothy helped us understand the limits of palliative care and eventual outcomes awaiting us. Each time I called with a question, Leigh and her staff of “angels” troubleshooted, answered all questions and problem solved the hurdle ahead easily, with grace and compassion. U.P. Hospice and Trillium House became true partners in his care. First and foremost, U.P. Hospice Foundation generously covered the Trillium House invoice cost for December 2023. Then on January 9th, 2024, his 63rd birthday, Martha stopped by to visit and give us more great news—the Foundation was paying for January 2024 as well. Needless to say, that was the best birthday and family gift I could have imagined. As caregiver for my brother, these charitable gifts to pay for Trillium House for us was an immense financial relief. On top of that, I was concerned with who was to drain his lung after I left on January 11th, 2024—I’d been in Marquette since October 3rd, 2023. Again, U.P. Hospice stepped up along with Trillium House staff and coordinated his care. The staff had watched me do his drain, so now Dorothy trained them to drain his lung in my absence. What a blessing that was for me, him, our family and friends.

On January 23, 2024 when he peacefully became an angel himself, he was not alone—my niece and your “angels” Dorothy and Leslie were there at Trillium along with their staff. Until the end, he was shown love, respect, comfort and care—thank you. On behalf of him, myself and our family, we are grateful.

Dear Cindy and all of your staff, Thank you for the plant. This thoughtful gesture is appreciated. We also want to thank everyone for the great care and compassion bestowed upon him over the last few years. Your agency and all the people will always be remembered in the care of him.

What you folks do can’t be easy, but it matters so much. You provide comfort and stability in the hardest, most uncomfortable times. I want to thank you for the card and the plant. I’ve sent the Peace Lily to live with my dad, because while I’m good at caring for people and animals, I tend to kill plants. He’s already repotted it and added Martha, Janet, Leigh—You allowed me to care for my mom and keep her as comfortable as possible at home. You knew it was important for me to do it all, but made sure I knew I had help if I needed it. Everyone was so pleasant and communication, medication and supply delivery, and everything else was so much easier than any of our trips to the hospital—where I quite literally was doing more to care for her and keep her alive than the staff. I am so glad I got to share my mom with compassionate people. I wish you all had met her at her prime, because she was merely a fraction of her sassy, funny, kind self. Please make sure Marie knows how grateful I am for her kindness as well. It was so important for me to be able to take a minute to relax during her visits and to know my mom was comfortable with her in moments of vulnerability. My mom hated doctors and going to the hospital was consistently a panic-inducing nightmare for both of us, but she looked forward to visits from Janet & Martha. Thank you for everything you do. Thank you all for being so great and helpful!

Thank you for your donation! We will be celebrating this holiday season with 1,000 of our elderly friends in our five-country service area. Volunteers and donors make it possible to provide each of our elderly friends with a traditional holiday meal including a party favor and fresh flower.
Throughout December we spread holiday cheer by providing our elderly friends with a Christmas box of non-perishable foods including a canned ham, coffee, Trenary cinnamon toast, and more. Each elderly Forever Friend also receives a personalized Christmas gift through our Giving Tree program. All programs are founded in friendship to relieve isolation and loneliness among the elderly. Our motto, flowers before bread, reflects the spirit of our unique services. We believe that everyone deserves to have special friendships that make life worth living. Dear Jennie, Recently a very surprising surgery introduced me to U.P. Home Health & Hospice and some of your staff. After ten days in the hospital, lots of weight loss, high anxiety and wearing an ostomy bag I returned home. Feeling somewhat helpless, down in the dumps and very anxious I received a call from your staff. The first meeting was very informative and the gentleman was very professional. Soon thereafter Sarah arrived and introduced herself as the R.N. that would be my weekly caregiver. It is with gratitude I can say how beneficial that was for me. Your company is fortunate to have Sarah on your staff. From the very start her professionalism attitude and compassion made a difficult time much easier than I had feared. I cannot thank her enough for steering me on the road to recovery. Often enough it is my experience to criticize instead of compliment. Cindy, I cannot say enough about how much we appreciated and enjoyed every contact we had with your tremendous hospice staff. You got us into services less than 24 hours after we talked and what a range of services you provided, weekly nurse visits, emergency nurse visits, social workers, health aides for bathing and dressing, respite volunteers, Dr.Kroll home visits, hair salon service and pedicure service, all provided in the home. The staff we were most involved with and so greatly appreciated were our primary nurse Janet, her back up nurse Elyssa, our aides Marie and Sara and our social workers Elizabeth and Elissa. These people were so caring and positive in every contact. Marie and Sara treated her like a beloved grandmother. Our contact with on call nurses was always a very positive experience. Words cannot express my appreciation. One contact that I will never forget is an afterhours call I made over my concern about her sleeping a lot and not able to wake her and wondering if I should be doing something—the nurse asked me two questions, is she safe and comfortable. I said yes to both and she said that it all you can do. I felt so much better.
Your Clinical Manager Elyssa succinctly described her as tough, sweet and funny. Cindy, you and your staff are truly angels.

I could see smiling, sweaty kids learn how to be “Jedi Masters” outside my office window, while others pedaled adaptive bikes as their therapists ran alongside. And as I looked towards Unit !!!!, 6 and 7 year-old boys buried each other in their new sandbox. Even thought things look and feel a bit different this year, the sights and sounds of summer are upon us! Bay Cliff is back! For months, everyone at Bay Cliff was busy preparing for Summer Therapy Camp and the arrival of our summer staff and campers. Thanks to your generous gift of $300 we will continue to ensure the future of Bay Cliff! Your contribution guarantees that we will carry on our long-standing camp tradition of providing life-changing therapy for our campers! You have mad an investment in our future- now. Thank you. Dear Kori, On behalf of West End Suicide Prevention (WESP), I would like to thank you for your June 15, 2022 sponsorship of $200.00 for the 2022 LIVE Art & Word Contest. The LIVE Art & Word Contest is a contest open to all high school students in the Upper Peninsula. Students may submit any type of art form from poetry to a painting to dance to photography, or any other art form. The theme is Mental Health Awareness. It is the hope that these works of art will bring awareness to mental health issues and help break the stigma surrounding it. All of the artwork will be shared on social media, where the community can vote for their favorite pieced. The artwork will also be judged by an expert panel for its artistic quality and WESP for its mental health statement.The LIVE Art & Word Contest is coordinated by West End Suicide Prevention (WESP), a group of individuals facilitated by Great Lakes Recovery Centers. The coalition began as a group of individuals dedicated to prevention suicide on the west end of Marquette County. The group has since expanded and due to popular demand, has brought their LIVE campaign to the entire UP. The LIVE Campaign encourages individuals to LOVE (yourself), INCLUDE (others), VALUE (life), and ENGAGE (community.) WESP also promotes, coordinates, and takes part in educational and awareness events, as well as distributes LIVE and Dial Help materials.Thank you again for your generous donation.
